The following will aid you in designing a holiday in accordance with the species' canon! Please be sure to read through this journal thoroughly so you can get a feel for how the species works.

Creation

During a holiday, the people that celebrate put out energy into the universe as a result of their celebration and belief in the holiday. In some rare cases, this energy manages to combine together and manifest itself into a reflection of the celebration it generated from. The manifestation, sometimes known as an avatar, is called a "Holiday".

It is currently theorized that there need to be a minimum of 1,000,000 human beings celebrating a holiday for it to generate enough energy to create a manifestation. Even so, the amount of people who celebrate a holiday does not necessarily correlate into the number of avatars that exist for it (at least in direct proportion to the amount of people celebrating - 1,000,000 is a minimum, not an absolute), though holidays more widely celebrated do tend to have larger pools of avatars. Christmas, for instance, is celebrated widely around the world and has the greatest concentration of holidays born from it.

While a holiday can theoretically be born from any event that's celebrated by enough people to reach the minimum threshold of energy, the majority of holidays are born during the following human celebrations:

  • New Year's
  • Christmas
  • Eid al-Fitr
  • Eid al-Adha
  • Valentine's Day
  • Diwali
  • Chinese New Year
  • Easter
  • Basant
  • April Fool's
  • Passover
  • Ramadan
  • St Patrick's Day
  • Halloween
  • Thanksgiving
  • Hanukkah
Note: Please do not create avatars from fictional holidays. All holidays should be based off a celebration in the real world that is celebrated by humans - and popular enough to be celebrated by a minimum of a million humans. Fictional holidays are defined as holidays created by yourself, by a fandom, or by popular media like television, books, or movies.

Physical

  • Holidays automatically manifest in their teenage years, anywhere from around 15-18. Holidays do not age unless the amount of people celebrating their birth holiday decreases noticeably the next year. Aging is a sign of a holiday celebration dying out among humans, and is not a pleasant or popular thing among holidays, being a very strong social taboo. It's very, very rare for a holiday to lose a large enough amount of followers to impact the energy of the avatars born form it.

  • That said, holidays are capable of maturing in different physical manners but it's not quite the same as aging. For instance, a holiday born with short horns might have those mature into longer, sharper ones. Baby teeth might fall out and become adult teeth. Small wings might mature into larger ones. The key aspect is that all holidays look like teenagers

  • Holidays have two physical forms - humanoid and animal. All holidays are associated with a particular animal that matches either the holiday's theme itself or the culture that it was generated from. Holidays have a humanoid form (this doesn't necessarily have to be a plain human, but just vaguely in that shape) that they spend the majority of their time in. They also have an animal form (feral) that they will sometimes turn into depending on the situation. Holidays do not have the energy needed to sustain a shapeshifted form for more than a couple of hours, so they can't live in their animal form.

  • Most holidays appear human in some way, though sometimes they can be more stylized. Samhain, for instance, the Halloween avatar, is human shaped but has a hard skeletal carapace instead of human skin. As a general rule, holidays have a human-shaped silhouette, a human nose and human mouth. Some extra features may be acceptable depending on their relevance to the holiday or relevance to their animal form (cat ears, for instance).

  • Holidays enjoy getting into relationships but very rarely engage in any sort of sexual behavior. This is because they're primarily asexual individuals that were born from cosmic energy, meaning that they lack a definitive sex drive. The biggest exceptions are succubi and incubi coming from Valentine's Day or Halloween. While most holidays are asexual, they are still physically fertile as well as functional, and capable of forming families if desired.

  • Holidays are capable of dying if they are wounded critically and are not given medical attention. A holiday that dies on any other day of the year is typically permanently dead (barring some sort of magical intervention). However, if a holiday were to die on the day of their celebration, they are capable of using the cosmic energy generated by their holiday to regenerate themselves from virtually any kind of critical wound.

Abilities

  • Primary Ability - Token Generation. Holidays have the primary ability of being able to generate recognizable tokens from their respective holiday. These should be small objects no bigger than about 2 ft by 2 ft. Holidays typically token generate by summoning objects into their hands, or by summoning them into their clothing pockets to pull them out. Some examples of tokens include: candy (Halloween and Valentine's), snowballs (Christmas), cans of beer (St Patrick's), etc.

  • Secondary Ability - Variant. Holidays typically have a secondary ability that has a heavy influence from the celebration from which they generate. These abilities do not tend to be very strong or overpowered; a holiday that has practiced their secondary ability will get better at it over time but not to god-like levels. The secondary ability is unique to the holiday avatar itself. Some examples could be nightmare hallucinations (Halloween), seeing and manipulating relationship threads (Valentine's), seeing your naughty/nice list for the year (Christmas), etc.

  • Passive Ability - Healing. Holidays are capable of regenerating rather quickly. A cut that would take a human a couple of days to close up will only take a few hours for a holiday. Major wounds may or may not be able to be healed naturally by a holiday, depending on how much blood they lose and the productivity of their body (obviously if the wound has critically made them weak, then their body lacks the strength to self-heal itself at the rapid levels it usually does).

  • Passive Ability - Regeneration. Typically, a holiday that loses a part of their body (such as a horn, an arm, etc) are not capable of "healing" it back into place. Healing is limited to what would be reasonably expected from human-like healing, except sped up. However, during the celebration of their birth, holidays are capable of pulling upon the cosmic energy generated by their holiday to repair any missing limbs or body parts. This is the only time that a holiday can effectively "regenerate" a body part unless they have a secondary ability that allows for it.

Daily Life

  • Younger holidays (0-5) are always exceptionally energetic and friendly. They're very enthusiastic about their holiday and want to share information about it with anyone that they come across. They tend to get irrationally upset whenever someone insults their birth holiday, calls it "not real", etc. Their impulse control tends to be minimal and their energy levels are high. They are capable of generating objects very quickly without tiring themselves out.

  • Around the time a holiday turns five, they start to emotionally mature. They are much less child-like, silly, and obnoxious, and will settle into their more "adult" personality. The personality of a matured holiday is highly dependent on both genetics and the pool of holidays that they come from and the actions of other holidays. For instance, Christmas holidays tend to be rather cheerful because they live surrounded by other cheerful individuals. Valentine's holidays can sometimes swing toward promiscuous, lady's man (or man's lady?) types due to the influence of older holidays. Halloween holidays tend to settle into being pranksters and give off an eerie atmosphere, though some older Halloween avatars have been known to traumatize younger ones and make them reserved and fearful.

  • Every day, there's a Daily Dance that many holidays attend due to their borderline-obsession with celebration. This celebration happens in the Holiday Manor, a large building surrounded by the four seasonal towns. Celebrations include dancing, music, feasts, etc. While not all holidays will attend the daily dance (which is based off of the holidays that fall on the current calendar day), they might enjoy setting up decorations for the dance, making food for one, etc. Young holidays, being enthusiastic about all holiday celebrations, will tend to announce the daily holidays (at least one of them) and greet others with that information. Older holidays always don't engage in such rampant enthusiasm, but they will never deny the existence or celebration of a holiday. It is considered taboo to do so.
  • Holidays typically have a favorite song related to the theme their holiday, and will hum it under their breath while they're working or thinking. It's part of holiday culture to choose a song around 1-2 years old and memorize it. Holidays tend to be highly musical and enjoy singing songs together or playing instruments. This is also why the Daily Dance is popular, due to the music and raves that go on in the manor.

  • Holidays will generally take up some sort of occupation within the town, whether offering goods (like generated tokens) or services. There is really no concept of money in Holiday Town. Most trades are purely through barter.
